The 1. FJ Division, formed in 1942 from the units previously operation within the 7. Flieger Division. The division was operational on the Italian front. Parts of it fought in Sicily, battle for Salerno, defended the Gothic Line and the Monastery of Monte Cassino. Eventually the Division withdrew to the north and surrendered in Imola in May 1945. The Fallschirmjager were the pride of Luftwaffe and the elite of the German armed forces and the 1. FJ Division was no exception. Combat weary veterans, experienced ad tough fighters, stood the ground for the Allied advance up north the Italian pennisula. Between January and May 1944 the Division dug in their defenses on the massive of Monte Cassino where 4 battles raged during that time.
